How can you care about a new book when the world is on fire?

It’s a question many creatives and the people who support them have been considering in recent months. In January, acclaimed author Yasmin Angoe joined SinC Executive Director Julie Hennrikus for an Instagram Live discussion of how to handle new releases in difficult times.

First of all, our current moment is exactly the time for artists to make their voices heard. Writers, visual artists, performers and more have a vital role in building a better and freer society for everyone.

On a less elevated note, book release schedules are determined months or years in advance. An author has no control over the world that will greet her book. And she will have only a small, critical, release window to get attention for it.

And so, Angoe reminded viewers, it’s important for an author’s supporters to do a few concrete things:

  • Sharing social media posts.
  • Leaving reviews.
  • Going to book events. This is also a great way to build your community.
  • Ask libraries to order books.
  • Be happy for people’s success and celebrate.

Celebrating a writer’s success may feel counterintuitive in tough times, but it’s actually a vital way to remind ourselves that we’re human…and we can make the world better. Together.
