Audiobooks are one of the fastest-growing and most lucrative areas of the publishing industry. And there are a lot of things to consider if you’re hoping to produce an audiobook of your work. In a recent SinC-Up Tip author and audio producer Scott Pinzon aka Cole Chase offered some industry insight:
- How long is your book? How long will it take to record?
- If you’re hiring voice talent, you’ll have to pay by the finished hour, so you need a time estimate.
- A typical read averages 150 words per minute, so divide your word count by 150, and you know how many minutes long your audiobook would be. Divide by 60, and you have the running time in hours.
- Time varies by genre: a dramatic book that requires a slow read comes in around 140 words per minute – nonfiction may be closer to 160 words
