5 tips for getting the most out of professional meetings and conferences with Kristopher Zgorski from bolobooks (www.bolobooks.com):

1. Look at the attendee list posted on the convention’s website so that you know who else is attending–both fans and authors. Use this to expand your reading horizons by reading a book by an attendee who is new to you.
2. When the schedule is posted, print it out and spend some time looking it over. Pick out some MUST DO panels, but be sure to vary them between topic of the panel and who the panelists are. Don’t try to do everything, leave room for spontaneity.
3. Browse the Dealer’s Room. Support the vendors.
4. Authors: Don’t forget this is a “work event.” Of course everyone is going to have fun, but as authors, we get a tax break on the trip because it is work related. Fans don’t get that option, they are attending to meet authors. So it’s our responsibility to prioritize that interaction during “business hours.”
5. Fans and Authors: Volunteer, Volunteer, Volunteer.
