Happy 40th, SinC! What I love about this organization is its deep fervor for community. “Where writers belong” isn’t just a tagline, it’s truly lived out. For example, as Immediate Past President, I started up a mentorship initiative. When we called for mentors to volunteer six months of their time to have one-on-one meetings, we had an overabundance of people willing to help new writers, or even veteran authors looking to pivot. The second year, I served as a co-lead, and we also received generous offers, including a literary agent who fielded questions via a special webinar for participants. I’m happy SinC shows such great support to writers at all stages of their careers.
Not only does SinC look inward, but we strive to move forward, including collaborating with other groups to improve the overall writing industry and environment. I’m grateful to have been involved in crafting a conference inclusivity resource along with representatives from Crime Writers of Color, Disability in Publishing, and Queer Crime Writers. I’m proud to be part of an organization that advocates for writers, delivers much-needed resources, and provides a family atmosphere. Here’s to another forty years and many more!
