In a recent Instagram Live with SinC ED Julie Hennrikus, author Adrian Andover explained five key choices indie authors must make:
1. Shed your preconceived notions about the various paths to publication and embrace what’s best for your story.
2. Readers DO judge books by their covers. When it comes to hiring a cover artist, look for designers who are familiar with genre trends and industry conventions. You might even think about hiring an artist who has designed top-selling books.
3.Indie publishing, while fun, is a business. Without letting it interfere with your writing, spend any time you can watching YouTube videos, listening to podcasts, and reading author interviews on the business side of indie publishing.
4. Be clear on your personal values and career goals. When it comes to distributing your book, consider where you build community, where your ideal readers are, and what matters most to you.
5. Shift your marketing mindset from selling books to building community. Share your process. Celebrate others. Fangirl over your favorite books. Especially in the age of AI-generated books, invest in relationships and the sales will follow.
