In a recent Instagram Live with SinC ED Julie Hennrikus, acclaimed mystery author Leslie Karst offered five tips for creating immersive settings:ย
- Incorporate all five senses in your story, at least one per scene. ๐ ๐ ๐ค ๐๏ธ ๐
- Include details. Not too many, but specific ones that illustrate what it is that makes that particular place special or different. ๐๏ธ ๐ฑ
- Learn about the fauna and flora of your locale, and add it to your story. ๐ด ๐บ
- People are part of the setting. What sets the inhabitants of your locale off from those who live elsewhere? ๐โโ๏ธ
- Learn about the history of your locale. No need to include too much, but judicious placement of relevant historical facts can help make a setting seem more real and alive. ๐
