Writing can be such a solitary, challenging journey, which is why finding community is so important. Winning the 2025 Eleanor Taylor Bland Award was about so much more than receiving a financial award for my novel-in-progress; it made me believe in my voice as a writer and gave me the confidence I needed to finish the manuscript. As we all know, publishing is a long game full of challenges that sometimes feel insurmountable when we are tackling them on our own. I feel so fortunate to have been welcomed into a community that is committed to nurturing my craft as a mystery writer of color. Because being a member of this community has meant so much to me this year, I have signed up to start volunteering with the DEIJB committee this upcoming fall. I am excited to continue to support Sisters in Crime’s efforts to grow new, diverse voices in the genre.
